Artistic Swimming is built on the foundation blocks of the skills learnt in five levels of Grade assessments. These are necessary to provide the strength, coordination, flexibility and detail needed to progress in the sport.
The Grades are split into two different types:
Figure Grades - these are a series of elements in water with 1 land element assessment, (the splits). These are designed to develop skills and ability for specific ages of swimmers.
Routine Grades - these are a different series of between 10 and 13 elements in water that form the basis for movements used in routines.
At each Grade assessment, the swimmer is given a score on each element, and must achieve 5.0 or higher overall, (with only 2 elements at 4.5 or below) in order to pass. The scores are graded at Bronze, Silver and Gold.
