Our History
How it all started
The club was formed in 1979 as Portsmouth Victoria Synchronized Swimming and Water Polo Club and the name of Portsmouth Victoria is known and respected nationwide.
Since the start, the competition results have improved every year. Our first major achievement was in having two girls selected for the Hampshire Squad in 1981 and since that time we have had representatives in every Hampshire Squad.
By 1982 our swimmers were sufficiently qualified to enter the National Age Group competition. The entries and results of this competition have improved over the years and we have had National Age Group Champions in the 12 and under, 13/14 and 15/16/17 categories and this has led to many girls being invited to represent England in the Age Group Squads.
Continually improving results have led to Great Britain Junior and Senior Squad invitations.
At the end of 1997 at the National Championships Portsmouth swept the board - National figure champion, solo champion and duet champions and National junior figure, solo and duet champions.
In 2011 Portsmouth Victoria Synchro gained funding from the ASA as part of the Beacon Scheme. This would fund a Development Coach for 3 years with the aim of the club becoming self sufficient by the end of the funding in 2014. Over the past 2 years the club has increased its membership dramatically and and now runs two strands, recreational and competitive. This ensures that the club caters for all ages and abilities.
In 2012 the club started a Talent ID programme which involved visiting schools to run taster sessions and generally raise the awareness of the sport. This was a huge success and continues to run twice annually.
The club has also had success at the Recreational Multi Regionals in 2012 wiping the board with 2 golds and a silver. In 2012 the club had 2 girls in the England Talent Programme with an aim to increase this number in years to come.
PVSC were delighted that two swimmers were selected to go to the England Talent Selection event in Crystal Palace after the Nationals 2012. After much stiff competition both swimmers were chosen to train with the England Development team, which was fantastic.
